The following comes from the manufacturer (CBDRx). It is made for humans so many of the notes reflect this, if you plan to use it as well, I've left these notes in. My comments for pet use are shown in italics. Dosage information I received from the manufacturer.

What is CBD?

CBD is a phytocannabinoid that is found in industrial hemp and marijuana, which are two different varieties of the Cannabis sativa plant. The current market for CBD as a dietary supplement is based on industrial hemp, not marijuana, because marijuana also contains significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a phytocannabinoid that is psychoactive and, thus, capable of making a person high. Industrial hemp contains only negligible amounts of THC—no more than, say, poppy seeds contain opiates—and so it will not get you high. The plant is, thus, safe for human consumption and useful for components including CBD.

In the United States, hemp is often confused with marijuana. It’s a consumer misconception that has, for decades, slowed the market potential for hemp in the food, dietary supplement, textile, and even lumber industries.

The dietary supplement industry, in particular, has a lot to gain from hemp, and not just with hemp oil and hemp protein. A substance called cannabidiol (CBD) has shown nutritional potential for years, yet the taboo around Cannabis has kept CBD off the radar. Now, with hemp gaining a better reputation, it looks as though its little compound is finally poised for big market growth. And much of that growth could be in stress and anxiety formulas.

While CBD is not psychoactive like THC, it can still have a profound influence on the human brain, but first—is CBD legal?

Legal status of CBD

In order to understand if CBD is legal for sale and consumption, one must look at the legality of hemp oil, which can be tailor-made for high concentrations of CBD.

Hemp oil is listed on the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (with no restrictions on CBD content) meaning that hemp oil is a legal U.S. import. This is important because federal law prohibits the farming of hemp in the United States. Hemp can only be purchased as an import. Some state laws override this federal law, but most of these, for now, just legalize hemp farming. At the time of this writing, Colorado and Kentucky are the only states that have laws permitting the farming and sale of hemp, and these are both very recent laws. The market for U.S.-grown hemp, thus, relies almost entirely on legal imports from established markets. Canada, Europe, and China are some of the world’s biggest hemp producers, so they control the U.S. market supply and will for at least a while longer.

As long as CBD-rich oils are imported, or farmed in states where cultivation and production is permitted by state law, CBD-rich hemp oils are legal. But they are not legal if their THC content is above 0.3%.1 This threshold keeps the distinction between hemp and marijuana in place.

What is a cannabinoid?

Cannabinoids are the primary chemical compounds found in hemp and all cannabis plants. The two you have probably heard of are CBD and THC. CBD is the best known non-psychoactive cannabinoid, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the only psychoactive cannabinoid. Hemp oil contains only trace amounts of THC (less than .3%).

Functional Remedies’ CBD oils and CBD tinctures are made with whole plant hemp extracts that contain ALL of the beneficial cannabinoids and elements of the hemp plant, not just isolated CBD.

Why “whole plant” vs “CBD isolate”

Single-molecule CBD is less effective therapeutically than whole plant CBD-rich oil extract. Scientific studies have established that synthetic, single-molecule CBD has a very narrow therapeutic window and requires precise, high doses for efficacy, whereas lower dose, whole-plant, CBD-rich treatment regimens are already showing efficacy for many conditions. Single-molecule CBD lacks critical secondary cannabinoids and other medicinal compounds found in high-resin cannabis strains. These compounds interact with CBD and THC to enhance their therapeutic benefits. Scientists call this the “entourage effect.” Numerous hemp  compounds have medicinal attributes, but the therapeutic impact of whole plant hemp  is greater than the sum of its parts.

They sell hemp seed oil at my grocery store. Is that the same thing as CBD?

Short answer: No.

Long answer:

Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant typically using a cold-press process. Hemp seeds contain as much as half of their weight in oil, which is easily extracted and commonly used as a substitute for olive oil and other cooking oils. While it has a host of beneficial uses and is full of antioxidants and healthy fats, hemp seed oil is used for its nutritional value and is not the same as CBD.

High quality CBD oil is made from the flowers of the hemp plant, not the seeds. To get the most CBD and other whole plant cannabinoids out of the plant, the hemp must be harvested while the flowers are still very small, requiring a large quantity of plant material. This is why CBD products are typically more expensive than hemp seed oil and medical marijuana, but contain a greater number of beneficial compounds and have more far reaching positive health benefits.

What does CBD do?

CBD interacts with the body through the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) or endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system regulates the body’s homeostasis, or general state of balance, affecting such functions as mood, sleep, appetite, hormone regulation, and pain and immune response.

As the environment around us affects our normal state of balance, the endocannabinoid system keeps us level by mediating our body’s reaction to external stimuli. Taking a CBD supplement can enhance your body’s ability to maintain homeostasis and manage physical and emotional stress as a result of changes in your immediate environment.

Aren’t hemp and marijuana the same thing?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis, and both work with the endocannabinoid system in the body, but there are a few key differences. Marijuana has a high concentration of THC – the cannabinoid that makes you feel “high”. Hemp has a very low concentration of THC (less than 0.3%), does not get you high, and is legal in all 50 states without a medical marijuana card. Hemp has a much higher concentration of CBD than marijuana, as well as numerous of other cannabinoids that work with your endocannabinoid system to bring about greater overall health and vitality.

Where does CBD come from?

Functional Remedies’ CBD oil and CBD tinctures are made from hemp that we grow on our farm here in Colorado. CBD can be found in the stem, leaves & flowers of the hemp plant –however, the flower is by far the most valuable for a dense, rich, balanced CBD & full-spectrum oil. Quality CBD hemp oil only utilizes the flower. Functional Remedies full-spectrum hemp oil is only made with female hemp flowers and is high in CBD, phytocannabinoids, flavinoids, CBN, terpenes, phytonutrients and so much more, for a full CB Complex.™

What is CBD used for?

In the rapidly growing cannabis industry, CBD based products are becoming incredibly popular for their enormous therapeutic potential and wide range of possible applications.

Can you tell me more?

Actually, no. BUT – there’s a very good reason for that! Because CBD Oil, CBD Tincture and other sustainable hemp products are classified as dietary supplements by the FDA, we can’t make any specific claims as to what diseases and conditions they treats. So, while we have stay quiet about all the amazing things we’ve seen with regard to CBD and its therapeutic applications, there are large (and growing) array of sites, online resources, and scientific research from around the world that point to the many beneficial uses of hemp oil & CBD.

What is the best way to take CBD Oil?

We believe that taking CBD sublingually (that is, under the tongue) and letting it absorb is better than simply ingesting it. However, just like with dosing, you should find the method that works best for you. With the topical hemp salves, we recommend external application on the area of concern. (Please note: Hemp oil should not be used on open wounds.)

For Pets

  • Can place on food, treat or directly in mouth.

How much CBD oil should I take?

Just like your method of ingestion, your optimal dose of CBD oil or CBD tincture is highly personal. We are not able to make exact dosing recommendations as per FDA regulations, but we generally suggest that you start small, and work your way up to the dose that feels right, especially if you have little experience with hemp oil.

A small dose, a few times a day, is a better place to start than a large dose all at once. You can gradually increase your dose until you find what works best for you. An optimal dose yields the greatest benefits while minimizing any adverse effects. For some people, that’s 15 mg per day, but for others it may be 150 mg per day.

When you find that sweet spot, consistency is key. A good plan is to stick with your starting dose for 2-3 weeks to see how it affects you before increasing. While some folks might feel a difference right away, others may have to build up to an optimal dose to feel the desired results. Be patient with yourself, and give the product a chance to work.

Please administer twice daily, continuously for 2 weeks to see results. Most experience results before that time.

How long will it take for me to “feel” it working?

Some people feel results from whole plant CBD oil immediately (and that’s wonderful). However, many find that it takes 3-4 weeks of consistent use before they begin to feel the beneficial effects of the oil.

As with any new treatment, there are several factors that will determine how quickly you see results: duration and severity of the condition, concentration of your dose, and other therapies you might be using at the same time are just some of the variables to take into account when beginning therapeutic use of whole plant CBD oil or CBD tincture. CBD is a natural remedy that functions with your body to gradually improve its overall state of balance, and, unlike with most prescription medications, the changes you experience as a result can often be very subtle. This is a gradual process toward long lasting health and vitality, so be patient, stay consistent, and you will see results!

Will CBD oil cause me to fail a drug test?

As with any cannabis product, there is always a chance of triggering a positive drug test. Please talk to your employer or health care provider if this is a concern.
